The Night Jaafar Jackson Stepped Into Neverland Alone… Everything Changed – dw

The iron gates of Neverland haven’t felt this heavy in decades, but today Jaafar Jackson walks through them entirely alone. No film crew, no family members, no distractions, just him and the ghost of his uncle’s private sanctuary. As he steps into the silent rotunda, the air thickens with a profound energy that transcends mere acting.

You won’t believe the raw emotion captured as he finally confronts the place where Michael Jackson’s dreams came to life and where his heartbreak began. What happened next caught everyone off guard. Jaafar had prepared for 2 years. He’d studied the moves, the voice, the mannerisms.

He’d slept in Michael’s bedroom at Hayvenhurst. He’d read his journals and mantras, but nothing prepared him for the moment he first saw himself as Michael in the makeup chair. He told Jimmy Fallon, “Spending all those hours in the makeup chair, just that process of seeing me slowly transform into Michael was emotional.” He called it a surreal, spiritual moment and that’s when he realized he wasn’t just acting.

When you’re there, when you’re in your dressing room, you’re you’re you’re dressed, hair makeup looks fantastic as Michael, do you look in the mirror and go, “What’s going on?” Or did you go, “This is surreal.” This is my uncle. This is crazy. Oh, 100% absolutely. It was It was really a surreal a spiritual moment at the same time.

You know, spending all those hours in the makeup chair and and thanks to the incredible Bill Corso who’s the head of makeup on the film, just that process of seeing me slowly transform into Michael was it was emotional. Jaafar wasn’t just an actor playing a role. He was a nephew returning to his childhood playground.

He remembered visiting Neverland as a kid, playing hide and seek, riding the carousel, watching movies, and getting as much candy as he could. He was just 12 years old when Michael passed away. Now, years later, he was stepping onto that same property to bring his uncle back to life. The rides were gone. The animals were gone.

But, the memories remained, and those memories fueled his performance. Jaafar, what was your earliest memories of Michael as your uncle, but also as a performer? Oh, as my uncle, uh just family day, having all my family come. It was like 40-plus family members, and then just having all my uncles there, having fun, eating a lot of great food.

And And then my first memory as him as performer was seeing him perform. Uh I think it was Billie Jean. But, also with my my father in in Madison Square Garden during the 30th anniversary. That’s when I I knew oh that he’s a He’s someone very famous, you know, as a kid. I I I didn’t understand what that was until I got older.

Jaafar went deeper than any actor could. He created a research room at Havenhurst with every inch of wall covered. Quotes, handwriting, facts about what Michael achieved, and what was happening in the world at different points in his life. He was given access to Michael’s personal diaries and journals.

He discovered Michael’s belief in manifestation. He told Kelly Clarkson he’d write it down. He would repeat it. He’d even meditate for 30 minutes and just look at those mantras. Jaafar applied that same practice to his own preparation. allowed access to a lot of his personal notes, and I realized that he would do mantras, affirmations, and his belief in manifestation was was incredible.

I didn’t realize that about him until I really dived into it. And he would write everything he wanted to achieve. He’d write it down. He would repeat it. He He even meditate for 30 minutes and just look at those mantras and repeat it back-to-back. He’d put on mirrors. He’d put on the ceiling. So, you can see every day, and it really was like his pursuit to greatness.

So I applied that same work ethic and his that same belief with how I was preparing going towards shooting and it was it was very incredible just to see what those notes were saying. Jaafar made the decision to sleep in different rooms at Hayvenhurst, including Michael’s old bedroom. He said, “It felt crucial to be in that same energy that Michael had been in at the time.

” He set up mirrors in Michael’s dance studio. He rehearsed for hours. He’d wake up sore and ask himself, “Should I go rehearse?” He danced in loafers like Michael did. He pushed himself until his feet bled. He said, “It was crucial to be in that same energy.” He wanted to feel what Michael felt. rehearse for hours and hours upon hours until one single move was right.

Dancing until my feet would bleed or them go numb. There’s so many times I would wake up sore and be like, “Should I go rehearse? Should I just take a break and let the body relax?” Then another part of my mind would be like, “No, what would Michael do?” Just do it again. Yeah, I missed that. Yeah, yeah.

Jaafar never stopped dancing. He was rehearsing all the way up to the moment we start filming. Jaafar’s biggest challenge wasn’t the makeup. It wasn’t the research. It was Motown 25’s Billie Jean. He said, “I was working on Billie Jean, I’ll solely focus on that. I would say for about close to a year.

” He studied footage where Michael wasn’t aware he was on camera to analyze little nuance things. He wanted to capture the emotion behind the moves, not just copy them. He told Golden Globe voters, “I didn’t want to copy him. I wanted to feel it for myself.” And he succeeded beyond anyone’s expectations. So what was the hardest routine? Which one? Because there are incredible Look, we know that everybody’s going to go and put everything side by side.

It is incredible how you recreated these scenes. Which one was the hardest? Thank you. Which one was the hardest? Yeah. Um I would say probably Billie Jean, Motown 25. The night Jaafar walked through those iron gates, he carried something heavy. He wasn’t just an actor. He was a nephew honoring his uncle.

Jaafar Jackson: Hành trình hóa thân thành “Ông hoàng nhạc Pop”

He was a cousin honoring his family. And when Katherine Jackson, Michael’s mother, finally saw the film, she hugged him and told him he embodies her son. She told Jaafar how proud she was. Jaafar said, “Her opinion really was all I needed to hear. From the woman who knew Michael longest and loved him most, that was everything.

” And somewhere up there, Michael was grinning. I got the most incredible review, and it’s from his grandmother. And what did she say? She said, “Jaafar, the film was phenomenal.” I said, “Really, Grandma? Like you really think so?” She said, “You were so good. You were so good.

” And I I got very emotional, and I was just like almost like just shaking a bit. And it it was all I wanted to hear. And I told her, “Your opinion, your response means everything to me. That’s all I needed. I don’t need anything else.” Walking through Neverland alone changed Jaafar. He felt the weight of Michael’s vision, the joy, the pain, the loneliness.

He realized Michael built Neverland not just for himself, but for the childhood he never had. Jaafar said, “Stepping foot onto that property, you feel it. You feel Michael. It wasn’t just a movie set. It was a sanctuary, a dream, a place where Michael Jackson finally let himself be a child.” And Jaafar carried that feeling into EVERY SCENE.

MAC IS THE MOST RECKLESS DRIVER. OH MY GOD. THIS IS HE’S KIERAN ON THE BACK. They’re good kids, though. A nephew who once played hide and seek at Neverland became his uncle on screen. He bled. He cried. He slept in Michael’s bedroom. He studied his soul, and he won. The film is now the highest-grossing biopic of all time.

Jaafar went from a shy kid who loved golf to the face of a billion-dollar film. He said, “I promise you Michael is up there absolutely grinning about this. This one’s for him.” If this story moved you, drop your comment and hit subscribe now.
