It was timing, leverage, anatomy, position, and understanding. Nothing magical, nothing superhuman, just correct knowledge used properly. James looked at him and asked almost reluctantly, “Can you teach that?” Chuck studied him. “Do you actually want to learn or do you just want to learn how to beat me?”
James took a moment before answering. I want to understand what just happened to me. Chuck nodded. Then yes, I can teach you, but not now. Not today. Today, you need to think about why you challenged me, what you were trying to prove, and whether it mattered. Chuck picked up his gym bag, then paused before leaving. He turned back and said, “In combat, aggression can work against men who fight the same way you do. But what happens when the other man doesn’t give you that fight? What
happens when he uses your aggression for his own advantage? Think about that. The strongest fighter isn’t the one who hits the hardest. It’s the one who understands the most.” Then Chuck left. The door closed behind him, and the stage seemed darker than before. For several seconds, nobody said a word. Finally, one crew member whispered, “Did that really just happen?” Wayne walked over to James and put a hand on his shoulder. “You all right?” James sat back on the concrete and answered
honestly. “No, I don’t know what that was,” Wayne said. “You got taught something by a man you underestimated.” James looked up at him. “I’m supposed to keep you safe. How do I do that if a guy half my size can put me on the floor twice in under a minute? Wayne answered. Chuck Norris isn’t just some actor. I’ve heard the stories. The championships, the training, the respect serious fighters have for him. I guess most of us only hear those things. You just experience them. The crew slowly
drifted away, returning to work. But everybody there knew they would be talking about this later over drinks, over dinner, over phone calls to friends. I came to apologize, he said at last for what I said back there, about demonstrations about karate being for show. I was wrong. And I was disrespectful, Chuck replied. You were skeptical. That’s not the same thing. Skepticism can be healthy, James exhaled. Maybe, but I acted like an ass about it. Chuck almost smiled. James went on. I spent
years in the Marines, then private security. My whole identity got built around being the toughest guy in the room. Today, you showed me that doesn’t mean what I thought it did. Chuck said, “Being tough isn’t about being the strongest body in the room. It’s about being able to adapt, to learn, to recognize when you’re wrong and change.” James took a breath.
