foreign vintage Society Fame is a curse at Judy Christie knew the commitment that was required from her to have an image as an actress took a toll on her rather than sink and get smothered by the glamor of Hollywood that consumed its Stars she chose to make her path what was Julie Christie’s biggest anxiety make sure to watch the video Until the End and leave your thoughts in the comments if you’re new here join our wonderful Community by subscribing to the age of vintage Channel [Music] why did Julie Christie leave Hollywood
Julie Christie is different and if you are feeling particularly critical you could call her weird but is she really weird this is a question that many people often find themselves asking after they saw their actress wearing a palazzo to receive an Academy Award other actresses would have dazzled in the most exotic of Wares and decked in the flashiest of jewelry this isn’t particularly surprising considering how the actress viewed herself in describing herself she said I’m very socialized and unmannered I went to many boarding
schools in England but I didn’t learn socialization it’s easy to conclude that The Delectable actress is eccentric and her eccentricity pushes her to make her unique choices after all only someone eccentric could jettison accepted Norms such as avoiding the media while being a sensational actress when publicity is part of the trade of an actress for many stars the glamor of Hollywood provided them with never-ending pursuit of satisfaction Hollywood encouraged debauchery and the pursuit of quick fulfillment of desires
stars were known for their decadence and the public display of opulence so for Julie to turn away from all of this she must be weird or eccentric Julie left Tinseltown when she was one of the hottest and most commercially successful stars to have a house in Wales that was sparsely furnished you would think that the talented star was lost in time or had Spartan ancestors her house in Wales had a farm to which duly dedicated passionately she grew crops and tended animals while wearing the baggy clothes Farmers usually wore
her disposition to the perks of Fame and the party lifestyle of Hollywood is different and it is quite easy to label her weird or eccentric but again we ask is she really or are we so eager to label her that we don’t even consider that she may be onto something if there’s anything Hollywood does it is to disconnect its stars from reality stars live as if they are in a movie with no care in the world longer periods of shooting could disconnect actors and actresses from things that matter that pretend on-screen lives become their
reality it can be choking to live that way constantly so Julie sought out these celebratization and what better way to do this than on a farm although maybe her nervousness contributed to her decision to turn into a recluse her one-time lover Beetle called her the most beautiful and at the same time the most nervous person he had ever known still despite her seclusion from the rest of the world Hollywood sought out her talents but it was on her terms also trying to convince her to play a role was one of the most difficult things to
do Donald Sutherland had quite the experience of trying to get her to act in a film alongside him he was unsuccessful and apart from that he had a chill as he wasn’t used to the Spartan lifestyle of the actress this is not to say that she didn’t act in films when she left Hollywood for her quiet Farm she did so on her own terms for roles that she liked however these films didn’t succeed like her earlier films but did remind the world that while she may have gotten older and wrinkly her talents and wits were Sharp
one of these films that reminded the world of her Brilliance was Sarah Pollies away from her which was adapted from bear came over the mountain by Alice Monroe getting Christy to play a role in the film and not just any role the leading woman’s role was no mean feat when Sarah read the book she only saw one actress as the face of the lead it took her a year to convince The elusive actress to accept Polly’s insistence matched Christie’s reluctance Christie allowed herself to be persuaded by Sarah because she had a
selfish motive the ultra talented actress accepted the role because as she said Sarah is this extraordinary talent and I didn’t want anyone else to have the experience of working with her on her first movie so she wanted to be Sarah’s first the film was about a woman with Alzheimer’s who began to lose bits and pieces of her life slowly the woman Fiona played by Christy forgets about her love for her husband and instead remembers the terrible parts of her marriage that hurt her soon the woman would fall in love with
another man in her Care Facility tragic isn’t it the film was a hit and Christy’s depiction of Fiona was so emphatic that she was nominated for an Academy Award true to her character Christie tried to wriggle her way out of the awards ceremony as she didn’t like the media publicity attached to the event Christie had found peace and quiet on her farm and walking on the red carpet felt chaotic the gowns that made people’s mouths round in admiration were considered excessive by Christie she balked at the prospect of wearing designer gowns and

borrowed jewelry she disliked the feeling that she had become like a salesperson she also didn’t like how the award ceremony seemed to want to rob people of their independence she mentioned to a journalist that signs around the ceremony asked DARS to turn around Christie mentioned that the celebrity life was all but a lie and called it the curse of Modern Life she felt the celebrity life was dirty and would love not to be a part of it even if it meant not going to award ceremonies she wondered how anybody would willingly
choose the typical celebrity life the lady asked the ones who lived the celebrity life why they were into its publicity aspect they responded that it was part of what they signed up for when they chose to act in Hollywood it sounded alien to Christy as she avoided the publicity and sometimes felt embarrassed by it it is refreshing that there is a celebrity who didn’t believe in being a celebrity and would choose a simpler life even at the pivotal moment of their career most stars seemed like they had become consumed by Hollywood but Christy looked
like she had tamed Hollywood Julie Christie is a beautiful talented actress who defied the whole idea of Hollywood what she owes Hollywood is her talent and not her life in her own words she never wanted to sign up for the public life that came with Hollywood she compared the constant pokes of publicity into her life to having chewing gum and your hair always which to be fair is a nasty experience the lady disappeared from Hollywood Life and chose the kind of films she wanted to act in despite being one of the times
box office goddesses she needed to get that gum out of her hair she detested when Hollywood came around especially interviewers who had a pole shot for misinterpreting whatever she said or did not say one particular incident stuck with her in her heydays in Hollywood impacting her interaction with the media going forward when a journalist arrived she was with a friend and Christy’s friend graciously decided to make a sandwich for them this was after she filmed far from the Madding Crowd the next thing Christy would see in the
newspaper was how Christie’s maid came in with sandwiches the journalists tried to create the impression that the British actress was a typical pampered rich woman it hurt the actress and when journalists came around sometimes she would confront them first she just wanted peace and peace didn’t often bring in readers so when Tim Adams came around to interview her before they settled she asked I hope this isn’t going to be another interview in which under instruction from your editor you interrogate me for an hour about whether
I have had a facelift she had once done a lift for her beautiful jawline before it had become a subject of much discussion among the media especially when Christy refused to continue to meet Hollywood’s perception of beauty in interviews the disdain of resentment of her interviewers is always apparent she said people get angry with her subtly that she wasn’t The Dashing Young Beau that graced theater screens they were used to having Stars alter their appearance to portray youth The Talented actress wasn’t giving them that rather
she was giving them her lines and wrinkles she was being true but her interviewers didn’t like that in interviews if the interviewee isn’t an expert they would get scant materials from her as she very skillfully avoided saying much about herself Christie would smother you with other happenings in the world her Brilliance didn’t just stop at Movies it extended to politics her interest in politics came from her ex-lover Warren Beatty who was vocal and took an active part in American politics she campaigns fiercely for animal rights
and against nuclear waste also she works for the medical foundation for the victims of torture and takes care of fundraising and campaigning atop all this she has gotten awards for her incredible talent and portrayal of film characters there is the Oscar awards for the best actress in the 1966 film darling and New York Film critics best actress award for the same film okay her display in darling won her quite a number of Best Actress Awards the national border review and the British Academy of film and television
Arts award have her best actress award for the performance you could say the filmmaker the darling of critics and the audience after glow in 1998 was another film that also increased her Legend as a great actress she was awarded the best lead for the film by Spirit award film independent British film Award for best actress and evening standard but the actress isn’t done yet her Legacy as a talented actress continued as more Awards joined the existing ones when she played Fiona in Sarah Paul is away from her she blew the audience away
for that performance she won the best actress award from the Screen Actors Guild Golden Globe Hollywood Foreign Press Association and national board of review for someone who rebelled against Hollywood she has her Legacy written over the industry she has come a long way from that little girl born on the 14th of April 1941 as Julie Francis Christie and the Sam India she was born to Frank a Tea Plantation foreman and rosemary a painter she had to learn how to be on her own early as her father sent her off to England to attend elementary school a
separation from her parents was not easy for her and soon they divorced with her mother moving to Wales she often spent time with her mother when she had off-school periods the theater spoke to her and she traveled to Paris for art studies upon her return to England she took an acting course at the Central School of Music and drama in London where she learned about acting on stage after the course she debuted on stage with frinton Repertory company in Essex England her debut showed film Executives one thing they had found their next big thing and

after the stage debut she was quickly hard for a TV role her TV debut was in a for Andromeda a British Sci-Fi series additional roles followed this role in British films she had caught the attention of John Schlesinger a young director who cast her as the female lead in the movie Billy liar which was about a man with a drab life who finds Fun by fantasizing Christie’s character helped the male lead character to live the fun in his head as her first major film critics were impressed and an English critic commented on the Rarity of Christie’s
kind of talent John also cast her in darling his best film Christie acted as a sultry young model Who Rose to immense wealth by having multiple relationships with men she Charmed a TV journalist who was married an Italian prince and a ruthless advertising boss Jon intended the film to display the decadence that trailed certain aspects of the European lifestyle Christie’s performance in this film polarized critics for some it was an oscar-winning performance and a display of Julie’s inevitable magnetism to others the actress lacked the sexual
communicative aspects that were an integral part of her sultry character however Julie Christie won multiple Awards including an Oscar for her performance in that film she also played Lara in Dr shivago a movie about the Russian Civil War and its implications on the characters the film excited the audience with its cinematography landscape and battle realism which were packed into 3 hours and 17 for audience viewing pleasure the film won multiple Oscar awards however two flop films were just around the corner for the brilliant actress one
was the Sci-Fi Fahrenheit 451 the other was John Schlesinger’s third film with her and far from the Madding Crowd which critics panned however far from the Madding Crowd critics deemed Julie the film’s light as they praised her performance so for her it was a personal Victory and she did get to meet a person who she would be romantically involved with on the set of the film Terence Stamp after her romance with Terence Christie had a relationship with Warren Beatty one of the sexiest Hollywood leading actors the man commanded an irresistible
appeal that oozed on and off the screen the two couples would be together for years and share the screen together multiple times however they only appeared together in one film throughout the time they were dating the film they shared when they were a couple was McCabe and Mrs Miller a 1971 Western film after their breakup they appeared in shampoo which was beat his first film as a screenwriter but he also acted in the film The Last film that had the two sharing a screen was Heaven Can Wait an oscar-winning film
it was about a man who dies and returns to another person’s body one of her other notable films was don’t look now that film gave the audience a different side of the actress as she acted in an incredibly realistic sex scene with Donald Sutherland the sexual passion between the two was so real but it sparked unsavory rumors on set the two parties vehemently denied this at this point the actress was beginning to feel choked by Hollywood she had enormous anxiety as she felt she didn’t fit in and had trouble being the way
Hollywood expected actresses to be after she chose not to appear in American Gigolo the actress pursued a quiet and got it marrying Duncan Campbell as she left California for Wales she got roles even in her Solitude iconic among them was her leading role in away from her Afterglow Troy and Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban talent supersedes and Julie showed it with her Talent she could work with Hollywood on her own terms and didn’t feel the need to chase a path of temporary happiness and self-destruction
like actresses of the era she stayed true to herself and gave her audience true Cinema if you liked this video don’t forget to give it a thumbs up subscribe if you are new here and if you want to support my work please visit my patreon page it’s not just Hollywood that can make stars uncomfortable why Eva marry Saint felt uncomfortable from Marlon Brando let’s find out from this video
